The Magic Formula to Transforming Your Art
I've got two Collie dogs. They are my loves and I adore them both. But, I gotta tell you—they are so different! Like, night and day.
I'm raising them the same way... and yet, they don't behave the same way. Our boy Bleu is motivated by all kinds of dog "treats" while Sabryna is fussier about what flavor dog treats she gets. Sabryna prefers her own doggie crate for sleeping and Bleu prefers a soft cushy mattress.
Bleu loves to fetch a ball, but Sabryna prefers to retrieve a frisbee.
My art is a lot like this, too. Each piece poses unique challenges to me as I create it. Does that mean I have to go back to the drawing board every time I begin a new artwork? Thankfully, no! I use a formula of powerful tools, techniques, tips, and tricks to guide each artwork to its own one-of-a-kind outcome. It truly feels magical to see how they each come into their own, becoming a singular painting.
Guess what? My other favorite love (next to my dogs) is sharing the delight and magic of abstract art with YOU! Here are the ingredients of the formula I use to create abstract art that dazzles:
Go in with a Composition Plan
I suggest making several small composition studies on paper before you begin. This is like checking your route on a map before leaving for a new destination. You may end up taking a slightly different route in the end, but it helps to do some planning so you are sure to get where you want to go. Experiment with different types of composition: diagonal, circular, etc. and see which one speaks to you.
Create a Palette that Speaks to You
Another important step before beginning is to create a palette of colors that you plan to work with. Try choosing an analogous color scheme, and create tints and shades of the colors you choose. Be sure that you are using a limited number of colors so things stay harmonious.
Put Mediums to Work for You
I’m a big believer in the transformative power of art mediums. Mediums allow your paint to stay wet longer, become more textured or transparent, or obtain a glossy finish. They are truly the most powerful workhorses of the studio! If you haven’t explored mediums, you simply must—they will elevate your art.
Check Your Textures
As you progress through your painting, take a step back and consider your textures. Is it time to add texture using a painting tool, a stencil, or a sponge? I have all sorts of ideas about creating texture, and I find that texture adds richness and depth to paintings.
Contrast is Key to a Painting that Pops
Check that you have ample contrast in your painting. You can check this easily by taking a photo with your phone and using a contrast app or simply looking at the image in black and white. If you don’t see clear bright white and dark black areas (with shades in between), add more marks to make sure the viewer’s eye sees lots of contrast. Is there any white space? What about the juxtaposition of colors? Our brains love to see variety and contrast, so be sure that your painting has both.
A Flexible Formula that Keeps You on the Path
Did you notice how this formula doesn’t dictate the colors you use or the way you must paint? It’s a powerful set of guidelines that keep you from straying off the path as you create an abstract piece of art. I think of these guidelines as “bumpers” for my painting process that resemble bowling lane bumpers: they keep you out of the gutters and heading towards success. If I follow this formula, I’m sure to get good results from my paintings. Try it! I’d love to hear how it works for you in the comments.
