Finding Your Creative Drive—and Tribe—During Times of Transition

Are You in a Time of Transition?

We women go through periods of massive transition during our lives, and for many of us, the most notable transition periods are becoming an “empty nester” and retirement. For those with children leaving home, there are suddenly hours in the day that become available that were filled for 18 years with shuttling kids around, preparing meals, supervising homework, and the millions of tasks that parents must do. Similarly, those who are retiring are seeing broad swaths of time that used to be filled with commuting, meetings, phone calls, and paperwork suddenly become free time.

Furthermore, the past few years have been turbulent and disruptive—a transitional period for all of us. For many people, there have been job losses and lifestyle changes. Many of us have looked at our work and our lives with a fresh perspective.

Another kind of transition can be triggered by the loss of a loved one. The time we spent caring for them or spending time with them is no longer relevant, leaving gaps in our schedule that serve as sad reminders of our loss.

A Creative’s Exploration Guide

This free, step-by-step guide will help you progress in your creative journey.

Grow as an artist by building a solid foundation in your painting practice. Develop your confidence. Then, if you choose, charter a thriving creative business to call your very own.

Room for Creativity

When I faced the prospect of retirement, I made one of the most life-changing and fulfilling decisions of my life: I rekindled my painting practice and launched my career as a full-time artist. Painting has always been my passion and being an artist had always been my lifelong dream, but as is often the case, many other things in life got in the way of pursuing art. I loved my career in graphic design and sales, but I always knew that my true calling was in the arts. It wasn’t until I was faced with a huge life transition that I took the leap and decided to fill my days with canvases, brushes, and palettes—and I’ve never looked back!

What creative dreams have been hidden in your heart all these years? If the visual arts has been calling you, this transitional time is the moment to heed the call and say YES to your curiosity and passion.

Transitions are an Opportunity to Make New Connections

Diving into painting and growing my art business has been an extraordinary and empowering experience. Not only do I get to fill my days pursuing my passion, but I’ve met an incredible community of like-minded artists! There are so many of us who, like me, are following their true passions after going through a major life transition.

So many people pick up a paintbrush when the kids leave for school or retirement looms! And we can connect with each other, support each other, and learn from each other. How? We can connect via online or in-person art classes, social media, local art groups, and more. These friendships make us feel less alone as we move into these new roles and new identities!

You’re Not Facing Life Transitions Alone

Please know that you don’t have to face these unnerving transitional periods alone, and that incredible creative discoveries can emerge from these times! You can find yourself diving into a new interest or renew an old passion. Dive into the arts and find yourself surrounded by new creative friends, joyful experiences, and endless inspiration. And always remember, I’m here for you on this journey!
